Walnut St. Travel Disrupted

Update 08/26/13: A majority of the sidewalk along the north side of the Walnut has been restored and reopened. Some landscape planting and miscellaneous poles installation remains, as does completion of the Nano lawn area. The south side pavement remains closed.

Ongoing: Pavement reconstruction along both sides of Walnut Street, extending between the area of the Walnut 32 Garage and 33rd Street, diverts pedestrians into restricted corridor pathways.

Restoration of the David Rittenhouse Labs lower facade wall and construction of the Singh Center For Nanotechnology include sidewalk renovation along each side of Walnut Street. The entire project will continue through August, with a temporary jersey barrier system set up along both the south and north sides of Walnut for pedestrians and removal of the vehicular parking lanes. Pedestrian traffic is maintained within a temporary "cattle chute" system and the bike lane remains unaffected. A temporary crosswalk system is in place within the 3200 block of Walnut Street, at the Walnut 32 Garage, to allow pedestrians to cross safely, relative to the construction area.

Two flashing traffic light towers and a ramped mid-block crossing have been established. The traffic lights will be signaling green and red to start and stop vehicle traffic.  The traffic towers have hand controls that may allow a pedestrian to initiate a mid-block traffic stop and safely cross to the opposite side of the street, when pedestrian diversions are necessary, as work may be scheduled to occur on either the north or south side of Walnut during the project.

West bound vehicular traffic should expect possible delay.

Construction will continue until approximately August 31, 2013
