Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Cargo Vans

Penn Facilities purchased 5 CNG cargo vans during the summer of 2002. These vehicles produce far less hazardous emissions compared to gasoline versions and are cost effective. Fuel costs are comparable to gasoline models of the same cargo vans, but maintenance costs on CNG vans are lower. Furthermore, the air-quality benefits of these cleaner burning vehicles are especially important during the hot summer months when ground-leve ozone concentrations are highest.

Electric Cart

The 'zero-emissions' electric cart is used by Facilities Services employees to get around campus - without contributing to urban air quality problems. The vehicle does require electricity to run and needs to be plugged-in and charged nightly. Yet, the societal costs of charging at night are significantly lower than using gasoline vehicles. For example, doing so: prevents pollution during the hottest parts of the day, provides employees with a fully charged vehicle during working hours, and reduces the need for utilities to meet higher peak demands during the day (albeit very slightly).
