Civic Center Boulevard & South Street = New Traffic Routes

In April, 2009, Civic Center Boulevard became one-way southbound from Convention Avenue to Health Sciences Drive. Northbound traffic is routed on a new one-way road, Health Sciences Drive, to Convention Avenue... and Convention Avenue is now one-way between Health Sciences Drive and Civic Center Boulevard. Effective June 18, 2009... South Street between Convention Avenue and 33rd Street is one-way westbound only. Vehicular traffic is no longer able to travel eastbound on South Street. We strongly recommend that you look at the traffic routing maps below.

South Street Bridge Reconstruction

The City of Philadelphia closed the South Street Bridge for reconstruction at 9:30am on Monday, December 8, 2008. The demolition and rebuilding of the bridge requires the complete closure of the structure between Convention Avenue and 27th Street, including the on-and-off-ramps connecting South Street and I-76.The entire project is expected to take up to 24 months to complete. There will be no access to the entrance and exit ramps of the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) for the duration of the project.

Government officials visit Facilities and Real Estate Services

Vice President Biden, Governor Rendell, Senators Casey and Specter, Mayor Nutter and other government officials visited Penn on February 27 for the inaugural Middle Class Task Force Meeting. FRES hosted Biden, six cabinet secretaries and task force members at the Left Bank to showcase current building projects, give a tour of the operations command center and explain energy conservation initiatives underway, while exhibiting how the University is playing a role in creating green jobs through our management of utilities, construction, transit, and recycling initiatives on campus and in the surrounding community.

Weiss Pavilion Groundbreaking

With excavation fully underway and approximately 20 percent of work completed, the design of Weiss Pavilion by Crawford Architects proposes an infill of the long arcade on the northern side of Franklin Field for a new expanded intercollegiate athletic weight training program, some retail, and a recreation fitness center for use by the Penn community.

Out on a Limb at the Morris Arboretum

A tree adventure exhibit created in collaboration with Business Services and Morris Arboretum, FRES, and several consultants including Metcalfe Architecture & Design and Forever Young Treehouses Specialty Contractor will open in July.

Penn ranked among Top 25 Green Leaders by Scientific American

Scientific American has ranked the University of Pennsylvania #19 on its list of the country's "Top 25 Green Leaders" alongside other environmentally-conscious companies and municipalities. Penn, the only institution of higher learning on the list, was recognized for its purchase of 193 million kilowatt-hours of green power, the most among all colleges and universities.

Curie Blvd. Pedestrian Restrictions

To accommodate the Cyclotron Rehabilitation Project... Beginning July 20, 2009 the west side of Curie Blvd (between Stellar-Chance and Fagin Hall), will be closed to all pedestrian traffic. Intermittent lane closures and restrictions for vehicles will also occur on Curie Blvd near the Osler Circle/Curie Blvd Intersection. If lane closures occur, traffic will be directed by construction or police personnel to help alternate traffic or address any detours. NO PARKING AREAS WILL BE AFFECTED. This closure is expected to occur through January 2010. Pedestrian traffic will not be permitted to use the closed off area on a 24/7 basis. Vehicular traffic restrictions will occur intermittently Mondays through Fridays between the hours of 7:00 am - 3:30 pm.
