South Street Bridge Reconstruction

The City of Philadelphia plans to demolish and reconstruct the South Street Bridge. At this time, a hard start date and schedule has not been released by the Department of Streets. Facilities & Real Estate Services will attempt to provide information concerning the status and effect of this construction project on the flow of traffic to, from and around the Penn campus, as it becomes available. Please note: This is not a University of Pennsylvania Project and reliable information on this Facilities website, may not be timely.

As of April, 2008, the City has now announced a site mobilization date of September, 2008.

Effective Monday, January 22, 2007, until further notice... South Street Bridge is posted with a weight restriction of 6 tons. Emergency vehicles are exempt from this posting. The Philadelphia Police Highway Patrol-Truck Enforcement Unit is in charge of enforcement.

South Street Bridge Temporary Closures

Please NOTE: At various times, established traffic patterns on the South Street Bridge may be altered or closed for repairs on short notice. Current local traffic conditions are broadcast every ten minutes from station KYW located at frequency 1060 am, on your car radio.

05-29-08 - Temporary Closure - The South Street Bridge is scheduled for a full overnight maintenance closure on Thursday, May 29th, 2008, from 11:00 pm until 5:00 am, Friday, May 30th. This will effect ALL vehicular traffic from South 27th Street to South 33rd Street. Interstate 76 (I-76) WEST bound traffic will be diverted via the entrance/ exit ramps, over the South Street Bridge and back onto I-76. PennDOT will assist with the detour.

04-08-08 - Temporary Closure - The South Street Bridge is scheduled for a full overnight maintenance closure on April 8th, 2008, from 11:00 pm until 5:00 am, April 9th. This will effect ALL vehicular traffic from South 27th Street to South 33rd Street. Interstate 76 (I-76) EAST bound traffic will be diverted via the entrance/ exit ramps, over the South Street Bridge and back onto I-76. PennDOT will assist with the detour.

01-16-08 - Temporary Closure - The South Street Bridge is scheduled for a full overnight maintenance closure on January 16th, 2008, from 12:00 am (midnight) until 5:00 am. This will effect ALL vehicular traffic from South 27th Street to South 33rd Street. Interstate 76 (I-76) WEST bound traffic will be diverted via the entrance/ exit ramps, over the South Street Bridge and back onto I-76. PennDOT will assist with the detour.

12-19-07 - Temporary Closure - The South Street Bridge is scheduled for a full overnight maintenance closure on December 19th, 2007, from 9:00 pm until 5:00 am, December 20th.. This will effect all vehicular traffic from South 27th Street to South 33rd Street. Interstate 76 (I-76) WEST bound traffic will be diverted via the entrance/ exit ramps, over the South Street Bridge and back onto I-76. PennDOT will assist with the detour.

10-08-07 - Partial Closures & ongoing...Chestnut, Walnut & Spruce Streets - 30th & West

10-04-07 - Temporary Closure - The South Street Bridge is scheduled for a full overnight maintenance closure on October 4th, 2007, from 9:00 pm until 5:00 am. This will effect all vehicular traffic from South 27th Street to South 33rd Street. Interstate 76 (I-76) EAST bound traffic will be diverted via the entrance/ exit ramps, over the South Street Bridge and back onto I-76. PennDOT will assist with the detour.

03-31-07 - Temporary Closure - The South Street Bridge will be CLOSED on March 31th, 2007, at 8:00am until 6:00pm... between 27th Street and the I-76 ramps (Schuylkill Expressway)... on Saturday, March 31, 2007 for routine maintenance.

03-13-07 - Temporary Closure - The South Street Bridge will be CLOSED on March 13th, 2007, at 9:00pm until March 14th at 5:00am... between 27th Street and 33rd Street. During this time, the City of Philadelphia Department of Streets will perform maintenace. Pedestrians will be permitted to pass through the area. Emergency vehicals will be allowed access during the closure.
